Summer Trip to Colchester and Essex

Four days: Friday 6 - Monday 9 July 2018

Some of the buildings we may see on our trip

This year's trip took us south to Essex; we departed from Newcastle city centre by coach and broke the journey in the Stamford area. Our accommodation, with dinner and breakfast, was in the George Hotel in the centre of Colchester. There have been buildings on the hotel's site since the Roman occupation. Its Georgian façade conceals layers of historic construction which have served as a hostelry for at least 500 years. We are assured that the hotel's plumbing dates from the late 20th Century.

The town of Colchester has much of architectural interest dating from Roman to contemporary times. The surrounding county offered plenty for our day trips: the photographs above give a taste of the styles of building we visited.
