Christmas Event at The Newcastle Arts Centre

Tuesday 8th December 2015

Elaborate plasterwork in the Arts Centre

Our venue for this year's event was the Arts Centre on Westgate Road.

In recent years many long-neglected buildings have been restored, and the historical importance and quality of this area is once more being appreciated. Of particular interest is 55&57. From 1716 to 1736 this was known as the Assembly House. The interior in particular contains some rare and elaborate "Imperial" plasterwork in a northern version of the Italian style - now in need of structural repair.

We started in the Jazz Cafe in Pink Lane, Newcastle (close to Central Station) at 6.45 pm, followed by a short tour of the former Assembly House in Westgate Road and concluded with a buffet, refreshments, and the usual Christmas Quiz back in the Jazz Cafe.
