The Classical Orders and their Newcastle Heritage

From the eighteenth century to the present day architects working in Newcastle have used the five orders of classical architecture in the design of a surprising variety of buildings. Some have adhered closely to classical models, others have made radical departures, but all have enriched the tradition to produce the exuberant city landscape we have inherited.

Alan Beale recently retired from teaching classics at Central Newcastle High School and continues to work for the Centre for Lifelong Learning of Newcastle University.
